Avoid the trap of watching TV or, reading or thinking about something obviously unrelated when using cardio gear.  If you're bored on a treadmill or cross trainer, set some goals and some interval training to keep you engaged.   Use patterns of increased, then reduced intensity or incline angle....20 seconds harder/faster or upward, then 20 slower, say, with gradually increasing goals in overall measurements, such as theoretical calories or metres climbed.  Time will fly by, and the variation in settings will give you a far better workout.
