A recent study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, that examined 4000 people aged 55 to 80, says that those people who consume more high glycemic index foods (those that convert to glucose more quickly, typical types of which are processed foods such as sweets, biscuits, soft drinks, white breads, chocolate bars) are at greater risk of developing AMD. The connection is not absolutely established but the researchers suggest that high glycemic index foods promote abnormally high glucose levels in the bloodstream, and that high glucose levels are harmful to the retina and blood vessels in the eye.
